Arian, a young, ambitious wood elf in love with Andrella, the only human girl in the village of Arkendale, finds himself in despair over the burden of carrying on his fathers woodcraft. He always dreamt of following in his uncles footsteps, Lukas Brazenwood, retired legendary hero of the Elven Kingdom Meldran. At the age of elven maturity, Arian abandons everything when Andrella and her father are ambushed and enslaved by mutants while trading in the north.
He and his companions, Pellor Nightshade, a half-elf outcast, and Andrellas brother Arcanum, the first human to serve an apprenticeship with the wizard Fendarghast, are sent to Elfhaven to enlist the aid of his uncle in their quest to save Andrella, if she is still alive. On their way south, they encounter trouble and are rescued by the druid Mistenshar, who sends her apprentice Vienna Silverleaf with them for healing and protection
In the Northland, Chaon has returned, a venerable gray elf arch mage famous for his spell duel with Zoric the Time Wizard centuries ago. This time Chaon has gone too far, raising the dead and cursing his people. For his crimes against the innocent, Zoric banished his old rebellious pupil to Shansor the closest world to the sun. On Shansor Chaon discovers a lost race of ice trolls originally from Thandoria. Having suffered endless torment for ages on this blazing hot world, the religious frost trolls prayed for salvation. Chaon, as their avatar, seeks to right the wrongs of his ancestors who banished the trolls to the infernal planet ages ago. Using arcane powers he is able to break Zorics spell and return to Thandoria. Now he has unearthed the secret to restoring the trolls to their home world.
Using his nefarious magic to lead the Vargenda Barbarian Tribes into an all out war with the elves of the fertile Southland, Chaon prepares to place the last deadly piece of his intricate puzzle. His undead servant Venzorg is in charge of a slaving operation under the ruins of Mount Shallan in search of a relic of awesome power. This is where Andrella and her father are enslaved. If Chaon can acquire this artifact and pass the formidable tests involved in finding the ancient ruins of the ice trolls, then he will open a gate between worlds, unleashing the vengeful trolls
Arian and his companions venture north, sliding deeper into the arduous struggle against mutant clans, the undead, and fanatical ice trolls. Finding himself in love with their new druid friend, Arian is torn between Andrella and Vienna. Through various allies, they learn about Chaons plan and Arian is chosen by accursed spirits as their champion to face Chaon. After freeing Andrella and her father, they begin a race against mysterious forces to discover the Prophecy of the Gray Elves in the dungeons beneath the ruins of Grayheim Castle. Arcanum loses his magical powers in a battle against the undead but manages to find an ancient magical wand. They start to realize that if they defeat Chaon, they sow the seeds of an apocalyptic vision of another Dragon Rage that will devastate the continent of Krindor. Yet, if they do not act against Chaon, the elves will be utterly destroyed
