Quest of the Magi

What vision those magi held to cross
burning sands in search of the child of love.

Patterns woven in the sky illuminated their path
over curving dunes to the edge of an awakening age.

The glittering caravan moved slowly,
yet deliberately, camels bearing the gifts of their faith.

They arrived in Judea, where desert met sea,
and the people froze in amazement
when asked about the newborn king.

The throne grumbled, a desperate Herod
afraid of the three wise men
as his priests confirmed their prophecy.

Nothing he could do would prevent the
seeds of destiny from sprouting in his desolate land.

The Chaldean seers found the sacred baby in Bethlehem, and they blessed him with
nobility, wisdom, and power.

Then the elder mage held the radiant child
after years of searching for the star,
tears shining in his eyes…

And the infant’s oceanic eyes spoke
silent words uttered in his heart.
They said love, universal love, and humility.

But an angel told his parents to flee,
for even the magi could see the wicked stains
on the hearts of the king and his people.

And they knew, God in him would somehow die,
because his simple message of Love
would never match their entrenched
illusions of divinity.

I often think that our destiny welcomes initiative. It takes a deep kind of courage to embrace our true path in life, the true journey. The root of that word courage is the French "cour" which means heart. The heart is the core. You really have to be centered if you’re going to set out on a dangerous adventure like the magi. But they had faith in the mystery language of the heavens and knew that the time had come for the journey. In a way, we are all on a journey across our own particular deserts to deliver our special gifts, our nobility, wisdom, and power to create. And through that creativity we find unity with the creator.

Each of us is born in response to a spiritual need on the planet. And not everyone fulfills that potential. I think that if we continue to live on the surface of life without ever delving down to experience the deep richness of our source through entering the silence, then the population will continue to expand so we can fulfill the universal quota of spiritual potential. If you’ve got people only actualizing 10% of their potential, then there needs to be a lot of folks on the planet to make up for the collective shallowness.

When you fear the path ahead but take the first step despite that fear, that’s courage, the kind of courage that comes from the core, from the heart, and from being in touch with your center. And that’s the first step in any spiritual awakening, exploring your gifts and your potential and working to actualize it. The soul really yearns to dance to its own music.

And they knew, God in him would die

because his simple message of love

would never match their entrenched

illusions of divinity.

Back then the Hebrews were expecting a warrior-king messiah like David who would lead them in a revolt against the Roman Empire and bring liberation and restore freedom. Then suddenly this miraculous prophet emerges who tries to teach them to love their enemies and seek first the Kingdom of Heaven within. And the Jews wanted nothing to do with his metaphysical philosophy of love. The leaders basically said let’s get rid of this strange guy before he stirs up trouble in the establishment.
