World building is indeed a strange hobby. It takes a special kind of person with a deep devotion to creativity to spend weeks, months, and even years designing a fantasy world. Nevertheless, its a rewarding activity especially when you run a fantasy role-playing campaign and especially when you write novels set within that world. At the age of fourteen I painted the family globe blue and inscribed the continents of my imagination on it. Over the years I used that alien world map to create cultures and craft legends. My room was always cluttered with maps of mythic lands, strange cities, and ancient ruins. Every three years or so girlfriends would abandon ship but those maps were eternally loyal.
This section of Astrofantasy is dedicated to guiding people in the development of a complete fantasy world from the first step of drawing a global map to the last steps of deciding what the life of a barkeep at the local village tavern is like. This approach to world building assumes ambition! In other words, you are a passionate game master or author who wants to tackle the whole enchilada, go the whole nine yards (even though it takes ten for a first down!) . After struggling through this arduous, creative process for so many years Ive learned the tricks of the trade. If youre excited about designing your own fantasy world then youve come to the right place. Click below and lets get started!
